'86 Cherokee Chief

Not sure if right forum. 1986 Jeep Cherokee Chief (think 86 was last year they were made). Drove it all of 4 miles before the engine started knocking and locked up. Has a 2.8L Carb V6, need to know what other year/size engines would fit. Cannot find a 2.8L v6 anywhere near this year/type locally.

not little

No, this isnt a little Jeep. It resembles a mid-size suv in size and shape.

The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) was made from 1984 to 2001. 1986 was the last year for the 2.8L V6, but was not the last year for the Jeep Cherokee (XJ).

Easy to be a truck. Hard to be a Jeep.

If your Jeep even closely resembles this you have an XJ not an FSJ.

The guys in the Cherokee forum can help you with it.

PM me if this is what you've got and I'll move it to the Cherokee forum for you.

If it is a '86 xj Cherokee with a 2.8 v6, you can drop a 3.4 Camero short block for more power, or you can look for another 2.8 from a chevy or gmc s-10 truck or blazer- jimmy. The 3.4 will fit with your intake, exaust, flywheel, damper, valve covers, and oil pan if I remember correctly. Good luck to you.

Or hunt down a vortec 4.3. Little more common in the 4 door blazzers and should fit the same trany.

The problem with the 4.3 Vortec (great engine), is the wiring harness. Yes the engine will bolt up, but the 3.4 block with your intake, and accessories, will add more power and less headache. Unless you have a solution to the vortec harness problem, this is a good way to go. Let me know if there is a harness solution. I would rather have the 4.3 power plant, obviously. Cheers, Dave

4.3L has a different bell pattern than the 60 degree motors. It's the same as SBC (small block chev)
