85 Grand Wagoneer no power

I have a 1985 Grand Wagoneer I put in a new battery, starter solenoid and still no power at all when I turn the key. Any ideas? Everything looks right to me, is there a single fuse that is used for that system. If I turn the ignition to the start position I get the seatbelt light to come on, on the dash. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The transmission is out at the moment, its a recently acquired project. If that switch wasn't in the circuit, would kill everything?

If the plug for it is there, but unplugged, it will not start. Your starter solenoid should have a 5th connector on the bottom or back. Ground this connector, and you should start.

If you have no power to anything, start checking the fusable links coming from the solenoid

The negative terminal hooks directly to the engine I'm pretty sure.

Check that negative cable really well. When my 87 developed a "no power" situation like this, it ended up being a bad negative cable, even though the cable looked good. To test, simply use some jumper cables as a temporary ground(from battery negative to engine),and see if there is any change. If you get power with the temp ground, you need a new cable.

maroon 1987 Grand Wagoneer. stock for now...

If it blanked out completly when you engaged the starter (lights, seat belt light, ect), chances are its the ground

Now is there a ground going from the engine to the body or from the battery to the body. The engine is pretty much isolated by rubber. You need to make sure the body has a good ground also.

You could always move your engine ground to the head or block. It should be ok on the compressor if the compressor bracket makes a good connection to the block.

Im not good but im slow.

At the moment there is only one wire coming to the negative terminal of the battery, coming from the top of the ac compressor. I am going to add one going to the body as well. I have come to the realization that this truck needs some serious electrical work! Hack upon hacks upon hacks....That what happens when you get a truck thats been hanging around since 85.

Hey!
Okay, a little more info on what is happening will help.

With the key out:
Do the head lights work?
Interior lights?
As a 'general' rule the lights are isolated from the starting system.

When you say the 'transmission is out' do you mean 'out' like it isn't working or 'out' like it is not installed? Without the transmission in the safety switch won't be hooked up and I am pretty sure the engine won't crank at all.

Do you have a multimeter? If not, get one! Super cheap and a big help. I can help talk ya through how to use it.
