82 cherokee chief

Just bought my first jeep and title and vin say that it is a 82 but the front grill and headlights appear to be from around a 78. Is this possible? the current set up looks like the front of the one in the picture.

People swap grilles on FSJ's all the time. The one in the picture isn't from a '78, however. That razor grille was found in '63-69 FSJ's.

interesting wheel bolt pattern for an 82
unless those are just covers

The grill in the yellow Cherokee is NOT a "razor" grill, it is refered to as a "Rhino" grill but you are correct in that it is found in 63-69 FSJ's.
The "Razor" grill is found on 66-69 Wagoneers, 74-78 Cherokee's and 70-78 J-trucks. The grill for an 82 Cherokee is refered to as a Muscle grill and is found on 80-85 Cherokee's, and on 80-88 J-trucks.

And yes they all interchange with some simple mod's.

That is a 1979 Cherokee Chief. It has a Jeep Rubicon coil setup with Rubicon Axles which is why it is a 5-lug...

I just pulled the engine since upon purchasing I was told it would no longer run. I understand why. The relatively fresh rebuild was put together with the connecting rods in wrong. Crank is screwed. Now the question. Should I rebuild the 360 again or go to a chevy small block?

Not trying to spend a fortune although a 401 would be nice. Problem is finding one and getting them to sell it for something a budget minded person will pay. That is the main reason I was looking at a small block chevy.

Why not just build a 360? Those engines can make a ton of torque if put together properly, plus you know it fits without issue...
