77 Wagoneer Fuel Pump Issues?

Hey all,

I bought a 77 Wagoneer... "aka" The Beater Truck.

I was told that the owner before me replaced the Fuel Pump.
I start driving it and find that every once and a while the Jeep would just die at random times. After dealing with the issue for about 2 months my friend and I replaced the Fuel Pump. No more problems.... Now, only 8 months later, all the same issues come back. I replace the fuel pump again. And the issue goes away.

Does anyone know if this fuel pump issue is common in the 77 wagon? Or is there something else I should check out on it?

Thanks alot!

How random? Is your fuel tank at 1/4 when this happens, are you going downhill and stabbing the brakes possibly?

yah it is completely random when it happens. It could have a full tank, or half tank... It has happened on a flat road, and going downhill. I have had it when I was just sitting at a stop light, then all of a sudden, it goes dead.

How hot is it outside when it happens? Sounds somewhat like vapor lock to me.

Does the stall happen during hot weather or when the motor temp is up? I had the same issue a bout a month-or-so ago with my 90 Grand Wagoneer (360 v8).
Everything was OK during cooler weather and for about 15 minutes after start during hotter days. After that, I would get random stalls too.
My issue was vapor lock.
I had smaller jets put in the carb (i'm at high altitude) and my fan clutch was not kicking in when i was supposed too. I had it replaced with a heavy duty one.

Look at the fuel you use too. High levels of alcohol added to the gas can cause vapor lock too; especially when the motor is hot.
cheers

how often to you change the filter? and how clean is the tank? a rock of dirt could plug the line, when the vacum drops so does the rock of dirt allowing it to start again.

Add a filter before the pump. Also check the connector for the dist. The Prestolite ignition (gold box) has a habit of suddenly dying due to corrosion there. I had trouble with the fuel sock in the tank collapsing due to fuel additives (MTBE was the worst!) turning it to mush.
