The 401 Build

So been stupid busy and really glad to say goodbye to 2013.

I bought a 401 fully rebuilt to stock with stock pistons and all good parts etc from a solid machinist out of Colorado. Shipped to my door for under 700 bucks. Short block, but has rockers, balancer, flexplate and all the crud. This is to replace the 360 I was going to rebuild.

I had originally purchased a Crane (similar to summit 8601) cam, Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap and Holley 750 HP, I have a stealth HEI, and some other things etc.

I have now decided to up the ante a bit with a hotter cam and new custom pistons from Bulltear. I am going 10.5:1 with my ported and 3 angled 360 heads machined for guide plates, 7/16 bolts, and fully adjustable rollers. The cam will change to a solid flat tapped but I am using a nitrided stick with the Howards Extreme Duty mechanical lifters. They have a laser machined hole in the center to force feed oil to the cam lobes to prevent wipeout. (anyone here think these are bad let me know soon please) Profile is is custom ground and will run .558 intake/.578 exh with 242/246 @. 050. The rest is staying the same with Thorley headers and true duals, non cats, no AIR etc.

Plans are a 4L80e with a custom modded stall set to 3k with a flash to 4k however it has lockup so non issue for daily driving.

Gears now are 3.31's and NP229 case with 31x10.5s I may run the gearing up to 4.10/4.56 for fun.

Man I'm doing a 4l80e... I have to buy pistons and headers for the 401 and bore, hone, ring it etc. I have all the rest of the parts however I have 3 complete 454,468,462 in the garage which makes me think.....should I just bail on the AMC and sell the rebuilt 401 and use a big block instead?

Not counting the adapter!
I have an adapter for the AMC to a TH tranny, not sure if it will work for your 4L80.

Subbed. If I had the cash, I'd instantly snag that 401 off you. The wife would beat me with a stick though. Haha!

As for the swap, I'd personally stay with the 401. I like the idea of keeping them somewhat original. That's just me though. Also, I want to see you build this beast engine!

I'll post the pics of it soon. Yah I'm the same way hence keeping the 401. The heads are done now, pick them up this week from machine shop. Comp 3 angle valve job, springs, retainers, guides, seals, had the spring pockets milled for proper install height and seat/off seat pressure, screw in studs and guide plates. The cam I had already purchased for my 360 was a similar grind to the summit K8601 which would have been plenty in a medium compression 360 but would leave this 408 wheezing by 4800. I'm doing bulltear 10.5:1 forged pistons and a lunati solid cam with .561 lift etc for power range of 2300 to 6700.

Are you following any of the 401 builds in the CJ forum? Lots of good information in them for reference since these are a bit of a different beast than SBCs and BBCs.

Actually hadn't looked there yet, I have done a ton of reading on the amc and bulltear forums also spoke to Bulltear. You are correct these engines do respond to mods in a different way one of them being the head porting. SBC etc respond well to pocket porting etc whereas AMCs pick up most of the flow #s in the middle area of the runners and NEVER touch the floors etc. The one mod I see everyone doing is the oiling line from front to back like we did on 302 fords and 347 strokers. Then I have read that it's not necessary if the oil pump and system are properly updated. I might do it as cheap insurance figure it cannot hurt. With the port design and larger valves from the factory it seems they respond a lot like a Cleveland motor so if you want low end power and response higher compression helps offset the larger cam needed to breathe in the mid and high ranges. This is my first one I'm also refreshing my 360 short block with the new crane cam, pistons, rings, etc I may save it for a CJ build later or sell it. Already have all the parts.
