4-speed Transmission swap from J-10 to 1979 CJ-5

Folks,

I have a CJ-5 that I'm working to get back on the road. I just purchased an AMC 360 from a salvage yard that is currently in a 1981 J-10 Honcho. The J-10 has a 4-speed, which I believe must be a T-176, T-177 or T-178 (I could not get under it to find a casting number).

My CJ-5 currently has a 3-speed, which I'd like to replace with the 4-speed from the J-10. Transfer case and axles on my CJ are on the passenger side (Dana 30?) whereas the transfer case and axles on the J-10 are on the driver side (Dana 44?). Attached is a pic of my transfer case -- I'm unsure which model it is.

My question is will the T-176, 177 and 178 4-speed transmissions work with my transfer case?

Thanks for any info.
Tom

That looks like a Dana 300 transfer case, which is what I would expect to see in a that year of a CJ-5. If the transmission is a T-176, then you shouldn't have any issues. My '81 CJ had the T-176/Dana 300 combo. That said, you will want to check all of your dimensions if you are converting from 258 to a 360.
