360 or 401? How do you tell?

What's the easiest way to tell if a FSJ has a 360 or 401? Vehicle in question is a 76 wagoneer with 4 barrel intake.

360 or 401 is also stamped on the block in big numbers. That would be better than the VIN, as the engine may not be the original engine.

If my memory serves me correctly in 76 the 360s were 2bbl. But as stated it is stamped. Who knows what someone has done.

It was never stamped. The numbers are part of the casting.

They are 1-2" tall and located near the block mounts on each side.

1976 Wagoneer:

N 5.9L 2bbl 1%
P 5.9L 4bbl 98%
Z 6.6L 4bbl 1%

As stated above, it is cast into the sides of the block under the motor mount brackets.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it is PROBABLY going to be a 4brl 360. I'll check when I can get the thing up off the ground to look under it. I'm 99% sure it's the original engine, so I'll post the vin first and see what comes back.

I had a similar question once. I was told by a crescent-wrench carrying sage, be-clothed in coveralls stained with the oils of AMCs generations before, to remove the carburetor and inhale the effervescent wisdom of the intake manifold- that one day I may hear the words of the Oracle of the AMC be-speech to me my answer... or pass out from the fumes...
(Yeah, its cast on the side)

Well, I checked the vin and it's a 401.....

I agreed yesterday (before I checked the vin; told him it had a 360) to sell the Jeep to a guy for $350

Ah well, he's gonna fix it up and run it, so at least it won't become another victim of the scrapper.

Well, there are a lot of unknowns about the Jeep. It's been sitting since mid 90's, but seems to be complete other than carb, front driveshaft, and drivers window. Interior is filthy/ door panels ruined, but the dash is uncracked and the floors don't have rust. Guy I bought it from said it was running when parked. He dropped the front driveshaft out hunting and before he could get it put back in the carb walked off, so it ended up in the vehicle graveyard outside the guys old gas station.

I bought it to get a Jeep Special Equipment Warn 8274 off the front for one of my CJ's. The guy who had it has had it since mid 90's and didn't want to scrap it (along with 20 other cars/ trucks he has). He wouldn't separate the winch from the Waggy so I bought the group and am selling the Waggy to get some of my money back, which I will need to rebuild the winch. That thing was TOTALLY seized up, but I finally got it all apart this weekend and now get to order about $500 worth of parts by the time I buy a new control pack, lower bushing kit, brake rebuild kit, mounting plate, and new roller fairlead.

I emailed the guy buying it tonight and told him that I was sorry that I had misrepresented it, and he said "that's ok!" I figured he'd be happy with the news.

For $350 I'd roll the bones on a 401.
I'm sure it won't take him long to get over your misrepresentation! lol
