1988 Grand Wagoneer... how's the motor?

I found a good condition 1988 Grand Wagoneer with the AMC 360 for $500. What was the power output for the 360 this year? I am planning on swapping it into my 81 cj-5 if I get it. Is this motor worth the trouble? Low mileage, very clean. I just wondered if the motor was very powerful. Anything is better than my 258 though right?

Ended up getting it for $450. What are the specs for this motor? I can't find anything specific for this model year.

If I recall correctly - the power output on that motor varied depending on whether or not it was equipped with a 4bbl or 2bbl carb.

well it is a 2bbl but I am replacing it with an edelbrock performer intake and a 4 barrel carb

The HP numbers for the later 360s were low because of emissions equipment, but with a 4bbl mani/carb and a mild cam, you can get 250-275 hp out of them easily. I built a 360 for my 73 J4000 and it was desktop-dynoed at almost 350hp.

Stock hp for the later GWs was around 144hp and nearly 250ft-lbs of torque.

Lots of GRUNT.

I took an 88 Wagoneer 360 and put it in my 88 YJ. I love the 360! Great torque, runs like a top, easy as hell to work on! I went with an HEI ignition to simplify wiring and it starts practically instantly. I still have the stock Motorcraft 2bbl on it but it runs great so Im not fooling wtih it. I think a 360 in your CJ is a great idea. I think you will be pleased with the result.
