1985 Grand Wagoneer Electrical Help

I know there are several threads on here about similar issues, but haven't been able to nail down my issue. I have a 1985 Grand Wagoneer. This last week we jumped in to take a short trip and it just clicked when trying to start. Dome lights came on and were bright. Tried to start again and got a weak turn of the starter motor, then the lights went out and everything was dead.

So, I got out the volt meter:
- the battery is good.
- have power to the fuse harness on the yellow wire
- fusable link looks ok (but admittedly I don't fully understand the wiring logic on this thing)
- Ground to the started is good
- tested ground to the block by adding a second ground point

Fusable link leaves the starter solenoid and goes to the alternator, then a larger gauge red wire runs along with the yellow to the fuse box.

Any clues where to look next?

Thanks!

Ok, little more info. I jumped past the alternator from the battery and all lights came on and the the truck will start (as long as the jumper is in place). It's a new alternator (second in the past year). Think it's the voltage regulator? What would likely cause two alternators to go out?

Ok, my understanding is evolving a little as I read. I think the ammeter is the problem. I jumpered the ammeter and it all woke up. If the ammeter is no completing the circuit, I'm guessing the alternator isn't charging the battery. I'm surprised the battery charging is only through a little 10 or 12 gauge wire! I'll do the ammeter bypass and add a breaker between the alternator and the starter solenoid. It'll be a better solution anyway.
