1978 j10

I am new to the Jeep line and always liked the old FSJ trucks so I recently purchased this 78 J10 Honcho Levis edition. Decoded the vin and it is supposed to be a 401 engine in it but crawled under and checked behind the motor mounts and found 343 cast-ted in the block. I read AMC only produced this engine in 1967-69 and it was rated at 290 hp. This is going to be a father and son project for me and my 12 year old. we are going to throw a lift under it and run at least 2 street tire size classes at the local mud bog when it is ready.

Ah! A honcho. It just screams the late 70's and early 80's doesn't it? And a brow too.. I love the brow. Looks like a good starting point. If I ever get an old pickup it's going to be a honcho.

I have never heard of a 343. That just seems so weird. You saw this in big numbers near the motor mount? Is it based on the same engine as the 304, 360 and 401? Weird.

The 343 is an AMC engine all the V8 blocks for the 290,304,343,360,390 and 401 all share the same block dimensions it's the bore and stroke that make the cubic inches. The 343 was offered in the amc cars only from 1967-69
