trans swap question

right now I have an ax-4 in and I want to swap to the ax-15 (I'm assuming the ax-5 is darn near impossible to find these days as I can barely find parts for them as plentiful as the ax-15) and I also want to convert it to 4wd. how much money am I looking to spend on this, 1.5-2k? fairly easy work? (before anyone ask's, yes I am mechanically inclined.)

Depends on how you do it.
Check over at comancheclub.com. Everything you need to know about these trucks over there.

You're mixing and matching parts. Converting to the AX15 has been done. Do a search over there. I think the input shaft is too long and has to be modified. Not sure though.

Your front axle will need to be the same gear ratio as your rear.

If you could find a 4 cyl 5 sp cherokee, you'd be money ahead. It would be the ax5 instead of the ax15 though.
If you could find a 6 cyl 5 sp cherokee, you'd be good on everything except the gear ratio on the front axle would likely need changed out.

A 4 cyl 5 sp wrangler would have what you needed (again ax5), but the clocking on the transfer case would not be ideal.

Good Luck!

Glad you're registered over there. I actually saw some from you today.

Ax5 no aftermarket is probably because it is not a very strong tranny. Kind of like the Dana 35 rear end. Adequate for a stock 4 cyl rig with mild off roading, but if you start modding or do heavy off roading, it is likely to break.

the AX-4 and AX-5 are the same trans, just one has a 5th gear inside. the AX-15 is completely different (found behind 4.0Ls) . The AX-15 is both fixable and upgradeable because it it stronger and useful behind v6s to mild v8s in addition to the 4.0L. the AX-4/5 are weaker, but work just fine behind a 2.5L. There's just no reason to swap them behind anything else.
