I don't think they imported a 2.8 manual trans liberty into the US. But a UK ECU might work.

More like they exported all the 2.8 MTs.

Keep all the immobilizer stuff intact, SKIM, BCM, and ECU, and you should be alright.

You might want to look into what inmotion can do for you on the manual trans issues, other people have gotten around it, but I don't know what they did.

Haha right you are

Well I found a non-immobilizer manual ECU. It's en route to me so I'll update this post when I know more.

I talked to inmotion, they were uh well less than helpful... I'm sure he's great for canned tunes but I do not believe he knows his way around the code beyond the basic maps.

Thanks

Your experience with in motion is pretty typical from what i have seen.

Just a mention (great pics btw. I passed this info link on to some Jeep/diesel nuts) I noticed the pics of the 2 bellhousings side by side had the 4.0L bell upside down? (starter was on the wrong side)

No, the CRD bellhousing is the nice clean one pictured(the broken one is the 4L), it has the starter on the opposite side:

Well I got to thinking and decided that the D30 is just too weak of an axle to put under the front end with 30.5" tires, so I decided to put a JK Dana 44 front under it. Quick search of craigslist and I went and picked up the cheapest one I could find at $300.

Its missing the passenger side knuckle and the brakes, I will either replace everything thats missing and go back to JK specs, replace just the pass high steer knuckle and try to use D30 unit bearings, or put on WJ high steer knuckles and brakes(cheapest option thus far and keeps the 5x4.5 pattern)

And now I will probably get a 8.8 with 4.10s and LSD for the rear, which is my ideal setup, selectable locker in the front, LSD in the rear. I'll top it off with a TJ locker switch and have everything nice and factory like I like.

The JK uses all new inner "C"s and steering knuckles, to my knowledge (TJ/XJ/ZJ/WJ)dana 30 parts will not work on it, unless you get parts from a JK D30.

Ya I've read a lot of different things, and I would be more surprised if the XJ D30 knuckles worked than if not, but so far I haven't seen any firsthand information or confirmation. I'm going to grab some WJ knuckles and brakes and see what happens. If it doesn't work then I will just resell the WJ high steer stuff.

To my knowledge the JK knuckles were based off of the WJs. WJ/JK knuckles aren't high steer though, they are cross over steering.

Nice find on the JK 44 though, my buddy just shelled out $2k for a Mopar crate one(the seller bought it before the price hike), and is getting some extra stuff with it. What are your plans for a rear axle now?

ok ok, crossover.....with slightly higher steering. Most people I have seen talking about the WJ knuckles refer to the them as highsteer. And while its not a true highsteering like some D44s have, its closer.

In any case, I basically am just trying to get 5x4.5 hubs mounted. Worst case it doesn't work and I resell the parts for a profit.

This is a sweet project. Someday, when I have the time and money, I'd love to extend the hood on a WJ and swap in a DT466.
