Plz answer a few basic MJ questions (noobie)
Ive owned an XJ for a year, love it, but HATE that I dont have a truck. I also dont like that my XJ is too small for me.
I recently found a commanche, 4.0, 5 speed 4x4 for a reasonable price. It looks like most of my XJ stuff 996) will go on there. a few questions: 1) What years did Jeep make the MJ/Commanche? 2) What are common problems for the MJ? Same as an XJ? or different? 3) I am a BIG DUDE. How much leg/headroom does an MJ have compared to an XJ? 4) Other than rear suspension, are MJ mechanical stuff about the same as an XJ? Thanks, I am sure you are asked this stuff five times an hour, but I appreciate you taking the time to answer. - Tom

As far as common problems, rust is the number one factor, like the XJ. As long as it's got a decent running 4.0 (shouldn't be too hard to find) you should be ok. Oh and what year comanche are you looking at, as the 5 speed might be the peugot which isn't exactly a quality tranny, especially with high mileage.

In regards to rust, big problem is in the floorpans. MJ's had an issue with the windshield leaking and it all ran down under the floors and rusted the floorpans. Easy fix by welding in new steel if you can't find replacement floorpans. I would say though that if you have not sat in the truck yet and you are "a BIG DUDE", you better do that. Not the roomiest cab in the world, even with the seat all the way back. Bench seat will help but if it has buckets, it's "cozy". I'd guess that any owner over 6ft tall would tell you legroom is minimal, IMO.

Also, check out the "stock specs" thread on this section's home page, a TON of good info in there.

MJ's seem to have alot of problems with having no spark. I've read alot on here about this problem. I have one in my garage that has no spark, I have replaced just about everything and it still has no spark.

The information above is based on the posters opinion. They do not have any common issue with “no-spark” and further more are very reliable trucks. You can Visit Comancheclub.com to get more info There are some common issues with any brand and model and also the year of that model Comanche’s and Cherokees share “for the most part” the same electrical and drive train systems and front suspensions. Common wear items are manual window regulators, rear tailgate latch, rusted out fuel tanks that also take out the rear break line were it passes the tank. The beds rust above the rear wheel well. It’s common for them to rust out the floor under the driver and pass foot well area. If std shift the clutch slave reservoir can leak onto the fuse panel and cause shorts. If auto the NSS “neutral safety switch” can act up and need cleaned or replaced. check that the truck does not have bad rust under and around the frame as this can lead to crushing and cracking of the frame in the front and rear at the leaf spring mount area. |

I just bought mine as well. The previous owner took care of the rust on the floor pan, as well as a new gas tank, and the slave cyl... As for room, it's pretty small. I went from driving my Formula to this and it feels like the steering wheel is 2" away, lol. Did any Comanches come with bench seats?

Yup. Makes sure it's in good shape before you buy it and I recommend trying to find one with the headrests. (bopping your head on the glass isn't fun.) --Pete

I'm 6'2 265 and fit in my manche with ease. Feels to me like my comanche has more room than the cherokee's. I know they are the same and maybe its just the bench seat in my comanche, but it feels more roomy.
