NP231 won't come out of 4wd

I'm looking for paths to take on this issue. I've got a NP231 that won't disengage from 4wd. It will shift with the fork (no linkage, so you have to crawl under it and do it). It was in 4LO for a wheeling trip and was moved back to the 2WD position. However, it appears to be stuck in 4HI. We drove it home and realized the issue but even after driving in reverse for a ways and forward for a bit, it's still stuck in 4HI it seems (from the binding on pavement). I was thinking maybe the spring is stuck or jammed? I'm not sure what else it could be, or what I should check, without having to tear it apart.

Thanks for any suggestions!
