MJ dies

Why does my MJ die as soon as I put it in gear?
I've played with the timing and the idle and the only way s to keep it running is to either turn the idle way up, or rev the engine when puting it in drive or rev.
Its got a carbed 2.8 v6, w/ auto trans.
Can any one help with this?

Thoise 2.8 had a lot of emisions vacum tubing on them, that was famous for leaking, I would check that at first.
