Long Bed Topper Options

I have been thinking about getting a topper for my 89 long bed. From what I am gathering, it aint gonna be easy. I was told that Leer and Bramha did make tops but have long since dropped the line. This MJ owner was also telling me that he had tried the S10 long bed topper, which will fit, but will not be as tall as the cab. He said it looked like crap and I would not be happy with it. I tend to agree. The MJs are not a truck you toss anything on that gets the job done. My is a work of art....lol....well a work in progress. Have any of you tried this and what advice/options do you have? TIA-Rich

I have an 89 MJ I am currently getting back to road worthy standards. It came with a 80's style topper on it. Personally it looks stupid. Also on the trail I am sure it would get beat to death, especially on some off camber sections. My plans are to turn it inot soemthing for my dog, cause no one will even take it from my yard.

Got any pictures of that original cap on your jeep? I've been thinking I need to find myself one as well for travelling (gotta keep out the harsh Canadian winter). I was even thinking of building my own, if I can get a good design on the drawing board. Fiberglass work I can handle.

This is an aliminium one, with black plexiglass windows, looks real 80's.

This is my top . Its not pretty, but it works. Its a Snug Top. I'm not sure what particular model, as it came with the truck. The original owner bolted on some Thule racks to haul ladders on.

Eventually it is going to be replaced by a Can-Back canvas top. Maybe try the Craig's list or The Recycler .

Good luck finding one.

Thank you for the link. I guess beauty IS in the eye of the beholder, 'cause I think the topper looks good. I will add Snug Top to my list of topper manufacturers. Thanks again, Rich

Thanks, I do kind of llike it, but usually I get negative comments. Right now its in deep need of a new paint job (the whole truck is) after umpteen years in the Cali sun. I'll keep an eye out for any that pop up.

Good luck.

Yeah, If you get a chance ask him. I am still trying to figure out exactly what I want to do with the MJ. I make go with a hard cover? Thanks in advance, Rich

Can-Back makes a cool top. They don't make one specifically for the Comanche, but I'm sure they could work with the dimensions.

I will be ordering my next top from them.

Just a word of caution, with as long as the mj is, on tight off camber trails you will recieve damge to a full hard top. WE have had xjs, bust their side glass on some of the trails we go on. so I can just omagine what would hapen to a bed topper.

That's the beauty of a Can-back top. Its a steel frame with a canvas cover, with roll up sides. The frame flexes easily, and the canvas can be removed. Its pretty sweet.

Besides, fiberglass will crack the first time you torque the chassis off roading.

Almost hate to tell you this, I have a gray LEER topper on a disabled 1988 Comanche Long Bed that I might be persuaded to part with. If you are interested let me know.
