just picked up an mj!

89 2wd 4.0 5spd short bed. Going to convert it to 4wd asap for winter. Have a few questions. I plan on going with a rather large lift/tire combo on this truck but not right away. Should I waist any time on installing stock axles or just jump up? If so what's the best fitting axles to look for? Width and what not. Also do I need to swap trannys or just tail shafts? Any input/advise is appreciated.

Id upgrade the axles , My build uses the chryseler 8.25 but i wont be doing any crazy wheeling or big tires . If you have the Peugeot 5 speed switch it out as fast as you can as their a weak transmission.

How much wider are full size axles? I'm guessing a ford Dana 60 and a 14 bolt is going to be my best bet. What about t case? What's the best choice there?

'89 should have an AX-15 but you need a different trans for parts at the very least to convert it to 4x4. Easier to get a 4x4 AX-15 and tcase combo. (4 bolts hold the shifter on. BA 10/5 has only 3) External slave is better than the '89's integral one. If you stay 5 speed and plan on 33" tires, 3.73 or 4.10s are the way to go. I had a BA 10/5 and it ran great with 3.73 and 33/9.5/15s. With the auto it REALLY wants 4.10 and I'm looking for an 8.8 from an Explorer to put in. (It's up for sale at the moment for $3500 in Seattle)

So I've found a 97 4x4 ax15 for a decent price. What's my best choice in transfer case? With the trans swap will I need anything else or will it all bolt up nice?

It depends on what exactly your planning on doing with it really , i prefer the np242 due to its on road all wheel drive ability but the most common is a np231.
