Instrument Cluster swap & high oil pressure reading

Hi Everyone,

I recently swapped a full instrument cluster into my 88' Comanche. It's nice to have gauges rather than warning lights, but I question the oil pressure reading. According to the gauge the engine has 60 psi of oil pressure at cold idle and running. When up to temperature, about 210, the gauge will drop to about 30 psi but that still seems high. I like to think that this engine is capable of that kind of oil pressure but with 183K miles on a 4.0L, it doesn't seem likely to me. The cluster came out of a 90' model Cherokee and the sender is new.

I invite your comments.

Mark B...

My '91 Comanche with 63,000 miles has virtually the same oil pressure readings. I'd say you've got a well maintained engine. If you're worried, go get a cheapo SunPro oil pressure gauge at a local auto parts store, hook it up under the hood and see if it shows any difference.

The gauge is supposed to be calibrated with the sensor. If the odd pressure readings happened after the panel swap that could be your problem.
