I need help. i am new with jeeps. please answer my questions

i just bought this jeep a few months ago and have had nothing but problems with it. it now is running rough and smoking, we think it may be sucking air through the lower intake gasket. we have been chasing problem after problem. it has 166000+ its a 1987 jeep Comanche with a straight six, any suggestions on where or what i should do please post or reply. the timing is also off, which is the cause of the running rough and smoking, i think. it is stuck way in advance.

Check the fundementals. Do a compression check, then check back, report findings and go from there. Not liking the smoke you are desribing however.

The ECU is under the dash(inside).
Timing isn't adjustable. Unless the distributor has been removed and improperly re-installed, the ignition timing should be OK.
Get a Chilton's or Haynes manual for it(actually for a Cherokee)
Pull the spark plugs one at a time(so the wires don't get mixed up)and examine the tips. the rough running/smoking may be due to faulty ignition on one or more cylinders, or leaking/stuck injectors. The condition of the plugs will tell you if that's likely(the manual will have pics of plug condition)

When was the last time it got a basic tuneup/service?

White or bluish smoke could mean a bad head gasket allowing antifreeze into the cylinders.

Black smoke might indicate bad rings, off timing (running rich), bad ignition wires, fouled or burned spark plugs (related to bad rings or timing issues).

Sucking excess air into the intake (vacuum leaks) will cause your Comanche to run awful as well.

As previously recommended, start with the basics...compression check, tune up, computer/sensor timing check, vacuum leak check, etc.

As said above, lots of possible reasons, but a clogged CCV tube could be the culprit (it'll force oil into the intake)
