I just saw in a junkyard......

.....while searching for parts for my XJ, a 1986 Comanche XLS long bed 4x4. Auto tranny with what looks like a V6 under the hood. This MJ obviously had a factory stock interior with buckets and a console. Did this model have a particularly special front or rear axle?

The front axle is nothing special. Just a Dana 30. If it's a Metric tonne/Big ton package, then it'll have the cool AMC-20 rear end.
Jeep on!

How can you tell if it had that option package?

The rear leafs will have 5 total leafs (be wary of regular packs with add-a-leafs stuck in there) and the rear diff cover will be spherical like a basketball.

I'll try to get back out there tomorrow to have another look. I might take my camera with me to take a few pictures.

I think I do recall that there wasn't a drain plug on the rear housing of the diff.

I just noticed in the MJ Spec section

That this particular truck is one from the first year AMC made the Comanche. Interesting.

Just take pics of the whole truck.

Inside, outside, and axle.

FYI, later metric tonne MJ's had a Dana 44 in the rear. I believe 88 and up.

JPK, did you ever get back out to see under this truck?

Pete, if I am correct, in 86 if it had an AMC20 rear it automatically had the m/t springs.

JPK, I am desperately looking for MT springs, so even if you have not gotten back out there, can you give me the info on the yard? I assume you are not interested these for yourself. Thanks for any help.

Yes, as far as I can tell, the AMC-20 only came with the MT package. Later years could get the Dana 44 as part of the trailer prep package and that would be sans MT leafs.
