Here's a general idea of the specs...
Base, just your truck with no extra components such as A/C or electric locks standard OR optional. Pioneer, A/C I think was optional on this, as mine has one and was not standard. Still no electric locks... Chief, MJ's never had electric windows, but the electric locks and A/C came standard now I think. Vynil seats I think came with this standard... Laredo, I think this had the option for Selec-Trac 4WD unlike the other models...not too sure. Leather seats might also be an option on this one... Eliminator, long-bed favorite for it's insignia's, labels, and trimmings. Also think it had the option for leather seats. SporTruck. Either it replaces Base model, or it's just the same as it. These are just assumptions based on things I have seen on these models.

Camper use?
Does anyone use a poptop camper with their comanche? I have a 1986 XLS LB and was thinking of using a Four Wheel camper. I can't seem to find any info on what the payload capacity is for my truck. My vehicle registration says "vehicle 3076 and GVWR 6000." On the door end it states "2700 lbs RA. The camper I'm looking at weighs only 780 lbs. My plan is go over everything that needs rebuilt and fix her up better than new. Then take her down the Baja coast next year. I have a 4X4. Any help? Thanks...Dennis...

The maximum tow rating an MJ was ever given was 5000 lbs (4.0L required). 2.5Ls seem to have been limited to 2000 lbs and 2.8Ls were 4200. I cannot find any rating listed for the stock bumper. Every brochure mentions a class 1,2,3 hitch needs to be installed for towing. Stock bumper has a 200lb tounge weight capacity and a 2000lb towing capacity ![]()

Roll Bars
Does anyone know where I could find the specs for 1993 CJ and 1996 Wrangler roll bars? I have spent over 4 hours surfing the net and cannot find anything.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance. |

I figured it out awhile back. The base model was during '86, then they started calling it the SporTruck during and after '87 with no apparent differences except for some decals and trim.

I don't think this was added yet, but the front doors from a 4 door xj are interchangable with the doors on a comanche.

Let's see if we can re-live this mess agin.........1st JP Magazine October 2006
Jeep Autopsy the last of the jeep pickups, its a must read. the MJ came out in 1985 sold as a 86 86-87 only the long bed aval 87 the ( 112.9 inch wheelbase 6ft box) the base MJ after 87 was the custom model, plus there was what Jeep called the "Low Series" X model the primo MJ was the XLS The Ironically named custom was cheap, designed for the to by buyer and had little or no bright exterior trim. The X was a slight step up from that with bright accents in the moldings. The X and The XLS had an optional sport decor group ( black grill and bumper ) 1988 the MJ went to an 8 slot grill The engine........MJ born with the 2.5 I4 worth 117hp and 135lb-ft of torque in 87 the figures were pumped up to 121hp and 141lb-ft torque AHH here's one.........Fuel Miser package was available for the I-4 Lowering the HP to 100hp and including a 4 speed manual trans no tail gate and undercoating and 3.31 axle gears the 4x4 Miser got the same treatment as well as no spare tire or brackets. The metric ton package outside north america in the states it was called Big ton payload package (long beds only) payload to a max of 2205 lbs by way of new springs and the dana 44. The opt off road for the big ton included HD gas shocks, front tow hooks, HD radiator and front skid plates there was a trac lock diff if the truck had the full size spare and had the 4.0 I-6 and the auto trans brought the pay load to 5000 lbs the standard gears were 3.54 with the opt. 4.10 's other then the fuel miser's 3.31's just a few notes on the truck and as soon as i find it agin the metric ton also came as a dule weel truck but not in the U.S. |
