ive got a 89' MJ short bed 2.5L 5spd and i need to know what size is the gas tank, the back of the owners manual says 18gals but when i fill up when the guage is around the red or on "E" it ussually takes about 15.1-15.8, one time i drove past the "E" and it took 16.2gals, i thought the tank was like 16.5 gallons

from my experience, my xj has about a 4~5 gallon reserve after the gauge hits E and the light comes on...

i guess the gauge gives you a really really early warning, how many miles do you ussually go after it hits E or do you not

i usually try to keep it above 1/2 tank because i've read it lubricates the fuel pump and helps it last longer and i'm anal about stuff like that ha ha. plus its just a good idea i guess. so... i couldn't tell you about mileage.

IIRC, there were three fuel tanks available for the MJ.
Short bed came with a 16 gallon stock, or an 18.5 optional.
Long bed was stock 18.5 gallon, with 23.5 optional.

Close. All shortbeds came with the 18 gallon and for the early years the longbed came with the 16 standard and the 23.5 optional until they made the 23.5 standard (in 89 I think).
Jeep on!

ok that sounds better Pete, because i have 335 miles on this tank, and at about 290 i was in the red on my gauge, and when i fuel up on the "E" it usually takes 15-15.7 gallons
