Engine dies at hwy speed...Ideas?
I hate my first post being one looking for help rather than offering it, but I'm stumped.
I've got an '86 MJ,2.8V6,T-5 The fuel lines leading to the fuel pump were very old and very shot. They were seeping fuel through them. You could look at the lines and as the fuel pump was pumping at idle it was actually collapsing the rubber fuel line. So, I replaced the lines. After doing that, I noticed the weep hole on the pump dripping fuel. So I replaced that as well. Now, all that has been replaced. Take it out on the road and try running up through the gears. 1st -fine,2nd-fine,3rd-fine till you hit higher rpms. Once it hits higher rpm it just falls on its face. Grab 4th and it will pull as long as you keep the rpms low. 5th at 65mph is a joke, not even a funny one. If you so much as think about stepping on the throttle at 65 it starts bucking. I can't help but think this is a fuel related issue. The thing ran great with crappy fuel lines and a weeping pump, it just stunk of gas and got horrible mileage. I'm hoping someone here has some insightful ideas that I'm missing. Here's to hoping..... ![]()

Wow, 4 days and nobody has any ideas?
Ok, well I'll solve this riddle. The fuel filter in the carb was partially clogged. It had enough fuel to idle and run at moderate RPMs but once you got the thing rolling down the road it just couldn't deliver enough fuel to keep the engine running. Needless to say, that particular filter is a PIA to change. It went in the trash and a good inline filter went in between the hardline from the tank and the fuel pump. Runs down the road with ZERO issues now. |
