The Craigslist Build

So I figured now is a better time than ever to start a build thread, so let the fun begin.

Yes, I know what you're thinking... this is an XJ in Comanche Tech. Follow along and it will make sense.
About a month ago (St. Patty's Day to be exact) I was browsing craigslist as usual and stumbled across this guy...

It's a 1989 XJ Laredo 4x4 4.0, Power everything, leaky fuel injectors, AW4 that wont shift on its own, filthy interior, runs but runs rough. Typical Renix.
$600 bucks later and it's mine with a clean green title.

I wasn't really in the market for a XJ, but I had one a few years back and loved it, so I figured what the heck.

Time progresses, and I realized the interior had to go. Think hobo meets dumpster and that's about what the inside of my XJ looked like.

So the gutting began. Gives "bucket seats" a whole new meaning.

And then pressure washed the seats...

Yay! Rust. Not too too bad though. Disregard the cut-in-half console. That's what happens when I get frustrated while pulling carpet and the sawzall comes out to play.

And I got 2 sets of wheels with it, all 8 tires are shot. While I actually favor the look of the older style, they are just in too rough of shape.
Decisions Decisions...

Picked up some new shoes at wally world. 31x10.50R15 Goodyear Wrangler Authorities.

And mounted them up... Here she was with no lift and 31's

Made a trip out to LKQ and grabbed these off a Wrecked XJ
Not bad for $9

Front lift goes in. I decided to only use the 2" spacers for now.

Picked up some S10 lowering shackles from the local auto parts store. Well what do ya know? Flip them upside down and they magically become XJ lift shackles.

So the Jeep is lifted, has new tires, and still runs about as smoothly as the U.S. government... Garage neat freaks please don't hate.

A week or two goes by and I throw a handful of sensors at it, and still no dice. Seems like the more I do, the worse it gets. I've been able to put a whopping 3 miles on it, and those 3 miles where filled with wonderful sessions of stalling, hard starting, and other cars honking at me.

I'm really beginning to hate my Renix...

So late last week the XJ went to back to Craiglist. I figured I'd cut my losses, and let it go on to a new owner. I don't really have a whole lot of free time anyway, and while I am mechanically competent enough to rebuild an engine, this Renix stuff has me stumped.

Then after dinner tonight I was sitting down on the couch, browsing Craigslist, eagerly checking my emails to see if anyone wanted to buy my POS cherokee, when all of a sudden I see this...

It LOOKS ok, and its another $600 dollar Jeep. I've always wanted a SWB Comanche. What the heck, so I gave the guy a call.

He says:
It's an 88'
2x4
4.0
AX15 trans that he swapped in.
318k Original Miles
Runs great and has a clean title.

Then I had one of those "lightbulb going off inside your head moments"

I said to myself, "Self, why don't you buy this Comanche, swap over the axles, tcase, interior bits, bumpers, and all those wasted 100s of dollars of new Cherokee engine parts over to this little Comanche? Then you can pull the engine from the XJ, scrap the rest, and build a stroker engine in the garage this summer, and end up with the truck of your dreams."

So bought it I did. $600 dollars later and the truck is mine.

More pics tomorrow in the daylight. Let the project begin. I'm sure my neighbors are going to hate me at the end of all this

Nope, recently split. So in the meantime I'm going to take every opportunity I can to go buck wild

Wow it's been a while since I've updated this. Sorry about the delay. Since my last update, my Wrangler was stolen and I have aquired a girlfriend. (damn you cirruslydakota for jinxing me)

So here's how she looked in the daylight. Not too shabby except for the busted windsheild, worn out suspension, and a dent from every motorist in town.

Also take note of the skunk paint scheme. White hood and roof, faded black everything else.

My first step was to cannabalize the new wheels/tires of the XJ. And add the coil spacers to the front of the MJ, along with some YJ shocks from Autozone. I must say, I've never struggled so hard to convey a message as I did to that poor autozone guy. He was insistant on not selling me YJ shocks, and even reluctant to look through the computer at any part that did not "fit my vehicle". After much deliberation, and a trip to another autozone I ended up with a pair of shocks.
Then I stopped by the local northern tool and snagged a toolbox. I've gotten mixed reviews about the look of the toolbox on it, but overall, function over form.

The Jeep "Fleet" in the driveway at the time...

Snagged some good taillights at the junkyard for 20 bucks. I only needed the one, but these things are rare around here so I decided to snag both to have a spare.

At the same yard I got this tailgate for 50 bucks. My old one was so beat up that it would barely close.

The smashed bumper was bothering me, so in the interum I decided to do a little redneck body repair.

And the old tailgate that is bowed in the shape of a U

Shackles off the XJ and on to the rear of the Manche to level it out

Sitting (mostly) level and looking sharp.

Not sure if I mentioned this previously, but when I purchased the comanche it had no keys. So the ignition was a flathead screwdriver and the doors were never locked. Out came the XJ steering column

Steering column out and gauge cluster out of the XJ

For those of you that have swapped steering columns, Im sure you can feel my pain. My arms are way too fat to wedge down in here and the spline shaft on the steering column after it passes through the firewall was a royal pain to line up... in the dark... by myself.

Steering column in, and guages mostly swapped (all but the original speedo and odo which I later finished) Who needs a 4" wide gas guage anyway?

A keyed ignition is a beautiful thing!
