Here is a good link to read...
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ba10_5.htm
The 10/5 transmission had a very poor record for durability and service, and consequently had the distinction of being the transmission with the shortest production run in Jeep history. It was gradually replaced by the AX15 during the 1988 model year.

If you maintain it, should last a long time. I hope because I have the BA as well...

The OO of my truck got 140k on his first BA-10.. I've got 125k on the second one. I haven't had any issues at all.

I have beaten on my BA10 pretty hard. It has some weaknesses, and it is not the preferred transmission by most people.
Having said that, you are fine to do some wheeling with it, a lot of people do, just don't be shocked when if it starts acting up.
Not everyone has the cash or the means to immediately swap transmissions, my advice is just to take it somewhat easy, and some day if it breaks, consider replacing it with a stronger unit.

Because the synchroniser rings are aluminum, the gears are actually too hard (a common failure is stripping teeth off of a low-range gear or two,) and it was designed for the Peugeot 505. Ergo, it's horribly misapplied in a light truck.
Good news? It swaps readily for the later AX-15, which is a Toyota light truck gearbox. Go to www.naxja.org, and search for "Let this be THE Peugeot to AX-15 Swap Thread!" for all the information you should need on the swap.

if it's fine now, just keep it topped off with oil and cross your fingers. Don't ever pay to have one fixed though. just be prepared and do the research on swapping it out.
I had one self destruct in a 2wd MJ while cruising down the highway coming home from work. No warning, just BAM! blew a hole out the side and drained itself of oil. was still able to limp home, though most of that was while being stuck in 3rd.

What did you swap in after that? AX-15? Probably going to do this soon...

there are some tricky spots depending on what parts you use (so do all your research first), but it's no harder than swapping out a trans and axle.

far as I know, the bellhousings differ in no way from 2wd to a 4wd version of the same engine/trans/year.
