Another coolant loss thread

I am on the hunt to locate the leak (think I actually found 2 under the radiator), plan to do a pressure test this weekend but this has more to do with a sound.
I've been hearing a sound that can only be described as the tone you get when you blow air across the top of a plastic bottle. It isn't constant, generally only when I get to 50-60 mph on the highway and then it's on and off.
Reading the Haynes manual it says that water pump shaft bearings may howl when they've failed.
How do I go about checking to see if this is the case?
