Ok done some searches and mostly come up with the K&N cone filter thing. I have a few questions and please bear with me as am a reltive newbie.
1) How does the K&N cone filter handle dusty conditions (I live in SA)?
2) What exactly does the TB height ring in Rustys kit do ... in what way does it improve performance?
3) What use does the present flat plastic cover over the TB perform - cools air? smooths out the intake???? Got me mystified ...at first I thought that that must be where the air filter was!
4) Can one simply increase the size of the existing sqaure hole in the airbox to let in more air, especially with a K&N?
Regarding K&N filters, normally they are regarded as being better able to handle dust/grime than stock paper filters. That is, if they're in the stock airbox. The conical ones are normally left open, and in that case I'd consider a prefilter. It's basically just a peice of fabric that goes over the cone that you can remove and clean every now and again.
However, I run a bargin bin cone filter without the airbox (needed space for a battery). I'm still 'getting around' to putting a shield around it to stop from sucking up any more water. It's not ideal, let's just say.
TB height ring? As in a TB spacer? It doesn't do much, apparently you'll gain 1-2HP or some BS as it allows for a greater volume of air in the intake. Well, they aren't that bad. If I was to have one, it'd be homebuilt though. I'm too cheap.
you can make a cold air one very easy, just go buy a 12" piece of 3" exhaust pipe from a muffler shop. weld on some pieses of small tube so that you can hook up the rubber lines again and drill through the center. pick up a cone filter of what ever make and attach that with hose clamp.
i did mine in about an hour, havent put the heat sheild on yet tho.
First, I disabled the hot air intake from the exhaust manifold. FI engines run fine without hot air helping the "fuel to warm"...cold is good. Dense is good...hot is not.
Once I removed the internal "door", I basicly capped it off so the hot air wount leak in- instant cold air intake...in fact, thats all it gets.
I use a standard filter- their cheap, and they filter. K$N filters actually work better when they get dirty, but its a tradeoff- the dirter they get, the better they filter..and the dirtier they get, the less airflow gets through..you need more airflow...not less...although they are cleanable, so its a realitive cost saveings if thought of that way.
The spacer is "supposed" to allow more speed to the air going down the TB...some say it works..the tech guys say it works...looks like it works. I dont spend that kind of money on something that gets such small gains.
FYI- there IS a baffle inside the airtube- if you keep the OEM setup, leave the baffle in-it pulls vacuum on the CPVC system back into the intake. Removeing the baffle causes some strange symptoms- its almost like its getting too much air and the computer cant compensate...looking into it.....I had read that removeing the baffle on later models is good...but no one has ever mentioned the renix era baffles.
Ditto on the hot air crap. Completely useless with FI.
And my cone filter setup (CAI if you want...) is just the rubber flex boot with a peice of intake off a Landcruiser stuck into it, with some holes for the PCV system. I was too lazy to find 3" ABS or PVC pipe, so I use what I found in the junkyard that day.
To do it over I'd actually use a piece of ABS and remove the flex boot, and I'd run it to the other side of the engine bay (can you say heatshield?) so I could move more of my underhood crap around. Maybe I'd even make a craptastic snorkel, that'd be neat.
And any sort of 'kit' out there isn't worth the money, mine probably works about as good as most and cost me all of $15 (filter).
henceforth, all lowbuck mods in MJ forum are to be known as "craptastic."
absofrickinlooty.
PS: I wrapped the lower part of the airbox in aluminum heatshield tape. (aluminum tape for home AC and heat use)
it gets so cold in there, the beer freezes up. I got friggin ice cream!
I pulled the baffle out of my 87's intake.
Don't have blowby, hasn't seemed to make much of difference. Intake is louder now.
