88' MJ 2.5L 4spd 2wd to 4wd qeustions !?!?!?

I been kicking around the idea of swapping my MJ from a 2wd to a 4wd . . .

Truck is currently powered by the 2.5L I-4/4spd combo, but will be upgraded to V-8/5spd combo. . .

I read it's best to have a second Rig thats got the axles n T-case ect.

The local salvage yard has 2 dozen 4x4 Cherokee's but no MJ trucks.

Can this swap be done with Cherokee parts ?

Is it worth while ?

Mike

cherokee is the same thing. you will need a 4x4 MJ rear driveshaft though, but by the sounds of it, that wont work either.

Why won't the rear driveshaft work ?

As in it'll work with the I-4 ?

But

Not the V-8 ?

Well I figured there would be a swap over then later a rearrangement once it was V8/5spd time.

2 part swap 2wd to 4wd then later I-4 to V-8 . . .

Ok now what Axles should i be looking for ?

there any way to tell them apart ?

as you all know the I-4 only makes 117hp n 135tq, But the AMC 290 V-8 produces 225hp n 300tq, and when with running a 5spd manual trans along with it.

i'll need some decent Axles. . .

set 1. Make the MJ a 4WD.

recoup from that spending then onto step 2.

step2. Repower truck with AMC 290 V-8 Engine.

I under stand the I-4/4spd to V-8/5spd may require custom drive shafts and possibly a different transfer case but i was hopping to only have to do 1 axle swap

front axle is fine, get a D44, AMC 20, or Ford 8.8 for the rear.

So the D30 will handle the V8 but the D35 won't correct ?

D35s can barely handle (and sometimes they cant) stock Jeeps. if you upgrade the shafts in the 30, you should be good. Your "only" putting in a 290 so the 30 should be plenty strong.

Don't under estimate that lil'290 out it that little beast turns out 225hp n 300tq.
Its a rather stout engine tho its a premium fuel unit as it has 10.2:1 compression.

Its all factory it was design for moving around 3800-4200lb cars 2.87 - 3.15 Gears 26-28" tall tires even.

AMC290 2bbl: 200hp n 260tq.

AMC290 4bbl: 225hp n 300tq.

Not to bad when you figure a 350TBI makes 210hp n 300tq. . .
