'86 carbed AMC 2.5 swap to '96 4.0 HELP lol

Just today I purchased an '86 MJ, AMC carbed I-4, 2wd, 5spd and am lookin to drop a '96 4.0 I-6, AW-4, NP231 in it....any help/suggestions/write-ups?

I am the proud owner of multiple XJ's, so the AW-4, 4.0 are nowhere near new to me. I've just never owned an MJ or a carbed AMC I-4. Any help would be appreciated.

Attached are my last 3 XJ's starting with my current:

AMC 150 I4 built to 2.7L, Weber 38/38 DGASM 136hp/173ft-lb 1984 Block

Took the engine out, had it bored out and got longer forged rods and pistons. 2.7L was the final number. :-)

They said I should be able to handle 6,500 RPMs without any real issue.. but it will get shaky at that range. lol. I just stick to the stock 5,200 RPM redline range.

I always thought the 2.5s in the AMC built Cherokees was fuel injected.

Nope. 84 and 85 had carbs in the Cherokee. Comanche came out in 86 with TBI. Cherokee had TBI in 1986 also..

Late '86 they went to TBI AND the firewall was made deeper to handle the 4.0L at the same time.

86 was TBI the whole year on the 2.5.

Don't know about the firewall. I'm thinking 87 when the 4.0 came out.
