Welding Power Steering Gear Box

Hey I noticed I had a power steering leak the other day and brought my 2000 XJ into the shop to get it checked out. The mechanic showed me I have a small crack near the top of my power steering gear box. It would be $700 to replace with parts and labor or I can buy the part myself for $400 dollars online and install it myself. I really don't have the money to make these repairs, could I just weld it closed to fix the leak and save money?

Welcome to jeepforum.

They are common boxes so go down to the junkyard and grab one and install it.

I read that I could pull one from a Dodge Durango and install it into my jeep... Is this true? I read that it would be an upgrade from the box I have in it now.

Yep. There are certain Durango boxes that will match the ratio and others that will turn faster or slower than what the stock box will run. The one you want is from a 98 Durango with the snow plow package if you make it down to the auto parts store. It doesn't take long to install it and I guarantee that when you return the stock jeep saginaw box that they won't know the difference and give you the core charge back. Haven't had anyone at vatozone even open the box let alone get over their own apathy enough to compare the two to make sure it's the right part. They don't even do that when giving you the part either.

Best of luck. I don't know the intricacies of the 2000 xj over the other years so you may want to do a little more research into it. Also, a power steering cooler is only $20 and worth the fifteen extra minutes to install.
