shifter fix

I recently fired up my jeep when it was cold. The shifter moved with a lot of resistance, then i couldnt put it into park. Instead it was reverse at the top. First i thought the plastic piece inside the arm. Tried the chopstick fix, but that wasnt it. The selector goes into all the spaces , including what is park. Could this be a issue with the cable, perhaps needs to be tightened. I have a automatic 03, tj. Thanks.

Has the bracket bent that holds the end of the cable on the side of the transition ?
You said it moves to all positions, does it get to the hold downs furthest from park?
