rocker guards
EDIT: Oops, meant to put this in fabrication section...if any mod checks this post out please move it for me.
I know there are zillions of posts about guards but I want to get a general consensus of material thickness. I wanted to make my guards out of 1/4" but the only angles I ever come up with as extra on my jobsites is 3x3. Seems like a 3" vertical leg doesn't give enough meat to bolt to the interior of the tub. I have some 3/16" stuff at my site right nowwhich I can cut any which height I need (structural heavy guage marinoware joists for the construction guys here) Is 3/16" up to the task for rockers? It seems like it could take the force of good hits.

The Rokmen Rock sliders are 3/16"
A to Z Fab rockers are 3/16" Fab Four rockers are 3/16" I believe you'll be alright with 3/16".

I used 1/4" on mine but I think 3/16" would have been sufficient.
One thing to look for though - If you go 1/4" and want to go wheelwell to wheelwell along the rockers, the 1/4" is going to push your fender flares out a good bit. You'll either need to trim where they attach the tub or cut back your sliders to go between them. Also, check around for a local scrap/recycling yard for steel. I bought mine for $.50 per pound and steel prices have come down since then. You'd probably be surprised at what you find. |

I have no problem getting stuff if I really needed it (I manage multimillion $ construction sites and could easily just ask my steel subs to get me something) I figured since I have this extra 3/16" stuff laying around that will be dumpstered anyway I might as well use it. Same thing with my new rear bumper build which I am calling "Project Overkill" because I have left over 4x4x1/2" steel angle at one of my sites I am using as the bumper. Although after I cut it to size, if the 1/2" is just way too heavy I will scrap that idea.
