So, I've been having trouble with my tj throwing a CEL (check engine light) code #31, I've replaced the purge solenoid and noticed some activated carbon (charcoal) in the inlet. I've decided it's time to replace the evap canister (or charcoal canister/filter), only to find that it's unavailable for my '97 TJ. Luckily, my model year has it located under the hood by the purge solenoid on the intake manifold side of the bay rather than the rear left corner. Found out that it's rebuildable, so I'm going to go ahead and do that today. The Napa part number for the filter that holds the charcoal in place is #2998 (autozone can cross reference it if needed) it's about a 4.5 inch foam filter that runs $2.49-$3.50 depending on your store. Hopefully all goes well and the bottom screws off easily. I'll be posting photos with the write-up as I go along. Hoping this helps anyone else who's having this problem (before they replace the purge solenoid and ruin it with charcoal) .
The upside down part number you're reading (5303-0903) is the evap canister (charcoal filter) and the tiny thing two inches to the left of it (attached to the same bracket) is the purge solenoid.
