1) Get a smartphone (I use a galaxy S4)
2)Go the play store:
Check out "DigiHUD Speedometer"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ndroid.digihud
3) Turn on GPS
4) Set color and brightness in app
5) Place phone in center tray on dash
6) BAM! you now have HUD display
7) (Optional) Buy Garmin windshield film:

HUD Windshield Film | Garmin
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop...rod144472.html

$10 through Garmin
You can also find it through Google shopping

The film helps prevent the double image you get on standard windshields

I'm confused... it just gives you another speedometer or did I miss something?

Yes, It's just another speedo. If you have bigger than stock tires your Speedometer will be off. When I am on the highway and the OEM speedo says 65, I'm actually going 69 mpg
The app uses GPS, which will give an actual mph. It also gives the direction of travel, average speed etc
Plus you don't have to look down and you can keep your eyes on the road and the best part IT IS FREE

Heads up display will show backwards, and the reflection in your windshield will be reversed to see it correctly, it will allow you to see it without taking your eyes off the road, I will say though, you need a piece of the clear film for HUD for it to display properly, mines hard to see, it may also be because on my Jeep, the proximity of the windshield to the dash is pretty close.

You can reverse the image in your phone. . .
You can buy the film here:

Guessing this only works at night when the glare from the phone reflects off the windshield?

Yes

And that's why I'm hoping that the HUD windshield screen will improve it's daylight visibility

Just purchase a Garmin HUD and use it with your Garmin smart phone app.
