how do I get cigarette smoke out from interior

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a 2001 TJ Sport but the guy who had it before me must have ignored the surgeon general and smoked 3 packs a day in this car. How do I get the smell out? Do I need to get it cleaned professionally, or are there any tricks out there?

THanks

Dilute some vinegar in water and wipe down the hard surfaces with a damp towel. Spray fabrics with Fabreze. It may take several applications over a couple of weeks. Fabreze now has a dispenser you clip to an air vent that would also help.

The vinegar trick might work, but your best bet is to get it done professionally. The upholstery is going to be the tough part to get it cleaned out of. You might be able to get some of the cleaning products that car dealers use online. I'm not sure though. I did a quick Google search and came up with a few things.

Hope this helps! Enjoy the new Jeep and if you have any questions, please let me know.

Hey Zach,

Thanks for the heads up. Ill definitely try it out. Good thing it's not winter and I can keep the top off for the next 4 months.

Ill update the thread once I resolve the issue.

Thanks again

Leave the top up.

Use one of these, follow the directions on the can.

After the correct time lower the top and park in the sun. The odor will be gone for good. I used it on an XJ with a terrible smoke smell 1 treatment and it never came back in the 5 years I owned it.

I'm thinking I will. Can't be more than the 250$ they quoted me to get rid of the smell professionally.

Thanks

I think I paid $10 for one can and that's all you need.

I bought an f-150 when I was in high school that had a smoke smell. I got it completely out. Get some dryer sheets and put a few in the interior.i put one in the ash try itself and one under the seat. About a week later change them. Then in a month. It really does soak up the smell.

I have a friend who has bad asthma and can't be around cigarette smoke at all. He is extremely sensitive. He rode in the truck one time a few months after I bought it. I asked if it was bothering him at all and he was surprised and said he couldn't even tell the truck had need smoked in!

x2 on the ozone generator... works to remove odors like nothing else. May not be available in your area though... some places have passed laws against them because the emit ozone - a pollutant. Duh - you're not supposed to breathe it, but run it and wait for the ozone to decay before re-entering. I bought one online and have used it many times to remove odors.

That's cool to know. Not sure of they rent them but I'll check. I decided to get it professionally cleaned anyways since the guy who had it before me was a pig. What a difference a cleaning did! Most of the smell is out but I wouldn't mind doing an ozone cleaning too. Carpets and seats look pretty good for a 2001.

Thanks for the info

Very cool. I think I'll give it a try. I still smell a little cigarette from time to time.

Thanks again.

I've heard that you should also remove the dash panels and clean the backs and underneath them. That stink has worked its way into every nook, cranny and seam in the Jeep and until you get it all the smell will remain. Best of luck.
