Hidden garage door remote

After growing tired of no place to put a door remote due to the wedge shape of the visors I decided to hide my remote.

I took my three button "Genie" remote apart to locate the switch contacts.

I took the pc board out and looked it over closely to locate the solder points for both switches.

I then soldered a pair of wires to two of the switches that I wanted to use.

I then put the case back together and routed the wires out a hole that was already in the case. You could leave the pc board out and wrap it with taped if you need to put it in a tighter spot, but the location I chose allowed me to use the case.

I chose to locate my switches in the flat panel below the switches for my axle locker switches.

This panel easily pops out at the top and has a pair or tangs that slide into a notch on either side at the bottom. I decide to locate my remote in a cavity directly behind this panel with velcro. This allows access to change the battery which should last a couple of years.

I used a couple of "momentary" switches from radio shack part #275-0644 for the new buttons. This requires drilling a 1/2" hole for each one in the panel, but you must pay attention to where it goes in order to have depth for the back of the switch when you put the panel back in place.

I then soldered the switches to the ends of the wire and placed the remoted in its location behind the panel and tucked the wire out of harms way and re-installed the panel.

Regards,

Tony

Hey, thanks. I've been planning on doing this - just have not gotten around to it. Now that I have instructions, I am more likely to get on it (:

I'll probably do this in a few weeks when I wire in the trailer brake control and a couple of accessory switches in this same location.

I only need the big main switch to work though - just have the one garage door. Can you please update your photo to show which solder point corresponds to the big button? I've got the same remote (:

Thanks!

wow...

you know you can put them inside the rollbar padding above your head? Right? The genie remote fits perfectly in the space. Reach up and feel the rollbar. You will feel an indention.... thats where the remote fits

Neat idea; thanks.
My remote is living in the sportbar padding right now.

I really like this idea. I currently have mine double-sided taped inside of the center console on the little lip in the front. It can be a little awkward to use somtimes, but its fairly stealth for a would-be theif.

While it hasn't happened to me, Opener + Registration (address) theft has become rampant in NorCal. More important than the convenince is the anti-theft nature of the permanent install.

Good Work!

I just bought a keychain remote for $25 at the Home Depot. It never gets stolen from the Jeep when the top is down, it never falls off the visor, and when I use the remote start to warm up the Jeep in the winter, I can open the garage first to avoid the fumes building up.

i use to have a nissan frontier and i took my remote appart and wired it into the hi beams on the headlights... that way when you approach the garage door all you have to do is flash the hi beams once and the door opens. it was a pretty easy install. just my 2 cents!

That's a nifty idea. I think I'm going to try that first - except I will wire into the fogs, since I've already dickled with that wiring some.

Thanks for the idea (:

I guess I am just lazy. I put mine in my glove box. The clip works on the side of the box to keep it from getting lost.
