Elastic Door Straps

I've had the footman loop ripped off the old passenger door before from a gust of wind. Not being a fan of the limitations of a web type strap, I'm installing 2" wide elastic from a local fabric shop. Once looped over the post it will be 8 layers thick, and I'm thinking 4-1/2" from the post to the mounting point as it will allow additional stretch if needed. I'm not going to bother with a footman or the stock screws; I'm boring and securing them to the doors with 1/4x20's. I'm also planning to include a longer loop of seatbelt strap as a safety limiter in case the elastic fails.
If I can post pics I will, but I'll let you know how it works out nonetheless.

Because why again? Your post was so informative, I was overwhelmed with the amount and detail supporting your position I could scarcely comprehend all of it. If you could cliff/sparks/for dummies it for me that would be so great.

To the OP. You might have some unintended consequences from the bungee strap. How is it working so far?

For the way I made them, 3 layers of elastic strap, they are great until a good gust of wind catches the door. My drivers door has a web strap made from a seat belt that limits it's travel, but the passengers doesn't and will swing fully open with a good gust.
The straps are one of my "Need to rethink this" projects. Maybe if I make the elastic straps different lengths, so the tension is applied and increases earlier when opening the door....

I'll rework them pretty soon and post the results. I've been tied up lately with this project that does have a happy ending to it.

Why not sew the nylon limiter to the elastic so it limits the amount of travel.
Kinda like v
WW

The elastic is the straight line and the limit strap is the "W" part so that way you get the benefits of both with out the entanglement of two separate pieces.

Hmmm...now there's an idea. I won't be able to get to it at least for a few weeks, but I'll try that once the other gators are out of my swamp. Thanks!

No worries. I borrowed the idea from some safety equipment I use.

Try an old boyscout webbelt which you can cut into smaller pieces and the sew a loop in it. That should work
