Best Penetrating Oil?

Got this as a forward in my email....thought I'd pass it along. Hope it's not a repost!

Quote:
A study done by Machinist's Workshop magazine in their April 2007 issue looked at different penetrating oils to see which one did the best job of removing a rusted bolt by measuring the pounds of torque required to loosen the bolt once treated.

If the study was scientifically accurate, it turns out a home brew works best!

Here's the summary of the test results:

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ...................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............. 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

The Automatic Transmission fluid (ATF)-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now use it with equally good results. The home brew is Highly Flammable---Use Caution !!!

Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

UPDATE....Not so fast!

Quote:
Although this article has gotten wide spread coverage on the web there was a follow up in a later issue that hasn't got quite the coverage.

ATF and acetone don't mix. When a reader wrote in to point this out the magazine contacted the author who admitted that he didn't actually use acetone. As it turns out he used 1-1-1 trichlorethane (sp?) which is a rather nasty chemical solvent that is no longer easily available to the general public. So, the test was bogus.
That said, I would think the numbers for the commercially produced penetrating oils should be valid.

been using PB for a long time and personally think it's much better than liquid wrench or wd40.....never used kroil though and i see a few people on here prefer that.....i'm gonna have to get some and try it i guess....but as far as freeing up stubborn bolts, spraying pb and giving it time to soak (overnight ideally) it hasn't failed me yet.

Marvel Mystery Oil
the stuff is awesome. They have a spray form as well & works great on rusted froze up bolts.
also great for stuck valves, fuel injection ( card & electronic) & all sorts of other uses

I do PB mixed with anti-sieze. If I can get to the threads of a suck bolt, first I'll spread the a-s then hit it with PB it works wonders.

mines cheeper

I love my PB blaster but, I had an old Mexican show me another trick when I lived in Tucson. He was a parts puller in the junkyard I got my yard parts from. I made a comment about howmuch WD 40 he must go through and he cussed the stuf. He used old antifreeze out of the cars in the yard. When an older car or truck came in he sprayed the blots down during the heat of the day with a squirt bottle and came back the next day and unbloted them. Call it recycleing going green if you will, antifreeze green
