ash tray mod

This may seem a little dicey for some of you...

But has anyone done anything to their ashtray?

I don't smoke and feel like it's a wasted area of my jeep. In my Xterra i would keep change and stuff in there. I was thinking about gutting the ashtray to be able to hold stuff.

Not sure if anyone had any ideas, or had done anything.

I dont even have an ashtray, but if someone made a cheap cubby to fill the blank spot I'd be happy.

I've seen a few people take another cig lighter/switch console and fit it into the ashtray spot.

I've seen people, with some other cars, wire up an Ipod dock in theres. Not sure if it will fit in a TJ or not.

The ashtray of TJs fit flush against the dash pretty well so I keep my change in there. The bums never look in there (believe me, when I work downtown at night the bums tend to go thru my stuff), they'll look in the console, the cupholders (now equipped with thumb tacks), the seats...but they never look in the ashtray cuz they can't really see it.

So my vote is for spare change.

The only time so far (I've been lucky) that my Jeep's been broken into, i wouldn't have noticed that he'd even done anything for a while, but I saw the ashtray was open and my gate card was on the floorboard. Change had been on the dash. The funny thing was that he took my gf's school books but left about $750 worth of snowboarding clothes that were in the back seat. All that to say - I wouldn't expect it to be unnoticed - but hey, it's just change. Jeep - the community vehicle.

Also - my bad on the completely unnecessary thread revival. Was browsing for cheap tricks and forgot I was in some older posts.

Yeah,

I dremeled out my ashtray mount and flushed the door even flat.

I mounted my Cobra 75 WX ST power unit behind it. I ran the lead out the cigarette lighter (dont smoke). Fit so nicely - I used a 'super glue' to attach the ashtray lid to the center console.

Worked light a hot damn!!! and no one knows its there.

I remember seeing something a while back. They made the ashtray a flip out iPod docking station. When you pulled it out, the male serial port of the ipod came out, and you just docked it standing straight up. It was then connected to the headunit and had a remote to change the songs.

I'm assuming someone bought a cheap ipod docking station and took it apart for the ports and sensors and went from there. I wish i still had the pic.

::EDIT:: I did some google research and came up with this. It's not the same as I saw before, but the same idea.

I've seen pictures on the TJ forum of guys that took out the ashtray and replaced it with another switch plate. This increased the number of aux switches from 3 to 6. They are used ofr lockers, lights, etc.

My PO left a picture of her kid in it so I kept it there for a year for some reason. I threw it away the other day.
