$3 Tire Deflates - ALL FOUR!

[yt]<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TF3w3Lm-dEs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TF3w3Lm-dEs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>[/yt]

Harbor Freight is responsible for this one!

Go and buy 1 pack of anodized valve caps. Also make your way back to the bicycle pumps and pick up two packs of the 3/8" threaded 1 5/8" long inflation needles.

Now if you already have some JB Weld, 1/16" & 5/64" drill bits, and a dremel/sand paper, you're done spending money!

Take the caps and pull out the little rubber o-rings in side them. Next, take your 1/16" drill bit (I used a Ridged bit because they chew through just about anything) and drill hole through the back side of the cap FROM THE OUTSIDE, IN. Its much easier to get a more centered hole this way... trust me, I went through 6 caps (I bought 5 packs for R&D) before figuring this out. Next, open up the hole with the 5/64" bit. If you need to center the hole a bit, do it with this bit. Now the inflation needle should fit snugly through the hole, from the outside inwards, so the flat neck of the needle is laying flat against the back side of the cap. Using a dremel or cutting tool, trim the length of the needle down so when the neck is resting on the cap, the needle point is still about 1/8" up inside the cap. This gives you room to thread the cap a couple threads before releasing air from the valves. Now, using the 1/16" bit, drill 8 holes in the outside diameter of the cap, from one side, through the empty center, to through the other side! there are rings in the knareling on the outside of the cap, the top 2 rings are where I chose to drill. Once you've cleared the debris, roughen the top side face of the cap enough to remove the anodizing. This make a better contact for the JB Weld. Take some JB Weld and cover the top of the cap with a light layer... don't worry about covering the hole or getting it on the stem of the needle. Now push the needle through the outside of the cap and make sure the stem is centered in the cap. Press the needle firmly into the JB Weld and clean up the edges of any excess that squeezes out. Now let dry!

These caps have an average deflation rate of about 12psi/min on 31x10.50 tires. I took mine from 50 to 27psi in 2 minutes with these, so in about 3 minutes, I should have been in perfect trail pressure range.

ENJOY!!!

Here's a video of 2min of deflation, 50psi to 27psi in 2min of my first design... a tad different, but same principle and components.

I like it! I plan on making some when I get a chance, though it's not top on the list yet.

nice job! is it not a good idea to just press down the valve stem thing to deflate the tires? or should "deflators" be used?

its not that its bad to do it by hand its just 100 times faster to make these. and if you deflate often def worth the few bucks

Why were your tires ever up to 50 psi?

Amazing! Would love to make a simple yet fast tire deflator like that.

I'm a previous road course racer/ auto crosser, and I have a bad habit of running the maximum sidewall pressure, which on my current tires is 50psi... I'm slowly breaking the habit... running 40 daily now.

The first video I only went down to 27 just to get an average deflation rate over 2min. The second video that is longer, they went from 52psi to 12 in 3 minutes... I run in the 13-16psi range on trails.

Your tires at 40 are still over inflated. Previous racer or not your driving a jeep not a race car. Run 33psi. Best on road performance.
