$10 Quick Disconnects

[yt]<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TQqzAzsMr0M&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TQqzAzsMr0M&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>[/yt]

2 - 7/16 x 2.5" Clevis Pins
2 - 3/4" Hitch Clips
2 - 7/16" flat washers

Total at Lowes/ Home Depot - $10.37

I'll post pics. If you can find them, use 15/32 hitch pins. The 1/2" are .022 too large, and the 7/16 are about .043 too small. The threads on the OEM bolts are .480 in width so you need that 15/32 pin to achieve a +.006- clearance. Other than a tad bit of jingling around due to the higher than normal clearance in the bushing, it seems to handle daily driving just fine and comes out super fast w/o any issues.

Stupid newb' question here, but you just install the quick disconnects on the bottom only? Or at both the top and bottom? Just wondering if that sway bar link (or whatever it's called) just hangs there when disconnected, or is totally removed.

thx.

I run this same setup. It has been around for awhile. Great alternative to disconnects.

Trikebubble- you only do the bottoms. Then you pivot the sway bar up and attach it somewhere or else it will get in the way and hang down. I just swing it up and hold it with a few zip ties.

To the originial poster, is it just me or is your tie rod bending? Might just be the angle of the pic but once those start to bend they aresupposed to be like a paper clip. Just sayin.

A note on the dissconnects. I have been running them for about a year now. Before you install, go to home depot and get some various thickness washers so that you can shim the space between the hitch pin and the disconnect. Otherwise it will be loose. I also recommend picking up a few extra hitch pins just to be safe. I have had a few get bent on me.

Yea its bent. It was actually bent the other direction. I turned the rod ends 180 degrees so it was bent downward, and then stuck a 2.5 ton floor jack underneath it. After heating it up with a map gas torch I used the jack to bend it back mostly strait and readjusted the rod ends to re align the tires. It seems to be OK for now, but I have a 1-ton Rugged Ridge drag link setup on the way so its just temporary.

Here's the video of the bending...

Anyone done this on a 95 YJ?

I plan to do this on my 03 Sunday, my son has a 95 YJ hoping to do a homebrew disconnect job for him -- any catches?

Dirty hands? This is a very strait forward job. Remove bolt, replace with pin, add washer(s), insert clip... done.

Its easily done in 10min time.

Actually, the only think I have heard to watch out for is that the head of the pin is relatively small and, after a while of the link moving around on the pin, the head can become weaker/break. Replacing the pin is cheap, though, so plan to replace them about every year, from what some of the other threads have showed.

2 quick newbie questions.

1. Do these rattle at all when driving on the street?

2. Can I use the bolts off of the front to replace my rear sway bar bolt? One of my rear ones siezed on and have to cut it off.
.

Thanks

Mine do not rattle at all, or at least not enough to hear. I do shim them with various size washers though. As far as the bolt, I am not 100% positive but I am pretty sure the rear bolts are smalled in diameter than the front. Just run to home depot or lowes and pic up a new bolt.

One pointer to the guys wanting to do this. I have found it better if you run it the opposite way as it is set up in the picture. Have the retainer pin on the other side of the axle mount thing. Kinda hard to describe but if you look in the picture at the top of the page how the clevis pin and retainer pin are, if you swap it you will have less problems. My main issue is that the retainer pin can sometimes get bent up on the side its on in the picture and that makes the quick dissconnects not so quick.
