The TJ's factory 4"x6" speakers use a non-standard mounting bolt pattern so aftermarket 4"x6" speakers do not bolt up without modifications to the speaker and mounting location(so even replacement 4"x6" speakers require an adapter).
5.25" speakers are round and will produce higher quality sounds versus an oval 4"x6". The aftermarket also offers a much wider selection of 5.25"s so you have more selection to choose from(and some are even less expensive than the same brand's 4"x6" model).
Basically, if it's time to replace your speakers you are better off putting in a 5.25" over a 4"x6" because the 5.25" is an all around better speaker for the money, it's bigger, and you are required to do the same amount of work(or less as is the case of these adapters) for installation.
If you have a 97-02 TJ there is a small piece of metal in the dash to snip out for installation. If you have an 03-06 it is a straight bolt on. Below is a write up done by a customer who owns a 97-02 model:

There is a lot more technical information as to why a 5.25" is a better choice, you are welcome to ask away...but for the average Jeep driver looking for better quality(or louder) speakers, this is the way to go.
Anyone else is welcome to chime in with a personal opinion of their new 5.25"s compared to the old 4"x6"s?
