You obviously need to get better at recon.

MEK (methyl ethyl keytone) although cancer causing over time, it will attack your nervous system much faster. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT handle it without gloves, and in a well ventilated area or outside. i work around 10-20 thousand gallons of it per day. i can supply the MSDS on it if anyone is interested.

ran is right but i just wanted to stress again to anyone using MEK for their monstaliner project. it is great for the intended use but very dangerous and hazardous material.

How do you search this thread for previous discussions on MEK?
I know I posted some detailed info

I have trouble searching through specific sections of a thread like that because even though you can search the thread, there are no real terms that would yield sufficient results. The easiest thing to do is to just skim page by page. I know the discussion made its way onto a few pages in a row.

I tried just searching "MEK" which would not have been written any other way and nothing comes up
the word cancer was definitely used a number of times

The search filters out words as short as MEK. Try searching M.E.K. which has been used some. The best results will come from MEK**** because the stars are just space holders. They are the official way around the short term search problems.

i will make a scan of the msds for MEK when i can. for anyone un-familiar with msds, they provide a lot of info on a substance. flammability, reactivity, potential health hazards, proper handling, and many more! (i had to lol). maybe i should make a thread just for mek.

Save yourself the trouble. I'll post it up here tonight and I'll discuss a little of how to interpret the contents.

By the way, there is no clinical evidence that MEK causes cancer. You'll note that on the MSDS which by law, must state if any ingredients are known to cause cancer that it must be included. There is no information regarding that on the MEK MSDS from EXXONMOBIL or SHELL Chemical, two of the largest producers of this solvent.

MagnetMan, would you mind posting that info in a new thread or editing your first post to link to the information so that it is easily accessible?

See below for my original post regarding MEK from 4-08-2010

Here is a link to the MSDS with yellow highlighted areas to pay attention to:

The paragraph below comes from this link: OSH Answers: 2-Health Effects of Methyl Ethyl Ketone

Q: Is there potential for methyl ethyl ketone to build-up or accumulate in my body?

MEK does not accumulate in the body. It is rapidly absorbed by inhalation, skin contact and ingestion and transferred into the blood and other tissues.
MEK is metabolized in the liver, mainly to 3-hydroxy-2-butanone and 2,3-butanediol which are eliminated in urine. Most MEK probably enters the
general metabolism in the body and is converted to acetate which is eventually broken down to carbon dioxide and water which are then
eliminated in exhaled air and urine. Small amounts of MEK itself are also eliminated in exhaled air and urine. MEK and its metabolites are mostly
cleared from the body within 24 hours.

I know you're not supposed to roll it on when the humidity is high, but is rolling it outside in the sun ok or should I do it in the garage? Not very much room to walk around the Jeep in the garage but I guess I could do it.

I went to the dollar store and bought to "painters sheets" that were 9'x12'. I folded them in half and draped them over the top to keep the tub out of the light. It worked very well. My pot life and dry time was shorter than when I did my first Jeep in November, but it came out great still.

I just wanted to get it out of the heat. I think the sunlight is fine, but I believe it won't cure properly if it is too hot (an NY sun bakes stuff).
