YJ steering box skid build

I was about to purchase the 1/4 inch fabtech steering box skid on 4wd tonight, had my credit card number in and was double checking my order when i decided to make my own skids. About an hour ago i ran outside with a flashlight, masking tape, cardboard from my garage and a knife i made a mockup of what it should look like so i know it would fit before i decide to start cutting material.

Finished the mockup:

Ill have some more pics up tomorrow

Hmmm.. this might be a good cheap DIY kit for those that weld.. I could cut everything on my plasma table and ship via Flat Rate Postal...

Made a second cardboard mock-up today in the light and changed it up from my previous design. I just modeled it up in Autodesk inventor.

Not knocking your design or anything else but you do realize with a leaf spring Jeep, your box already has a steering box skid. (leaf spring)
Looks great though.

I have heard that leafs are completely capable of handling rocks and act like skids but im concerned about that rare occasion where i might hit a rock the wrong way and wished i had a skid there.

Pretty big progress today, i cut the inconel with the plasma cutter and ground it flat, rounded the corners and tacked the pieces in place. hopefully it fits the first time when i place it tomorrow lol.

Cut up and ready for tacking:

Finished tacking:

Going to try on tomorrow and weld completely tomorrow after class
