YJ Front Bumper Build

I thought I'd share my front bumper build. I had some 10 gauge steel from electrical cabinets I've been saving. Perfect for a bumper fab or whatever. I wanted a bumper somewhere in between a shorty and full fender coverage. I plan to get some tube fenders in the future, so a full coverage bumper just looks too long IMO. I also wanted to get a winch mount(no winch yet) mounted. For the winch mount I went with the Harbor Freight universal mount. It was $38 with a coupon, cant beat it. 1/4 inch steel already bent with a fairing mount. I comes with some extra holes but the unused holes can be filled in.
Since this is 10 gauge steel, I knew the bumper wouldn’t be totally a functional rock crawling, hang the Jeep upside down from it, but more of a cosmetic bumper. If I bend this one up, I’ll reuse the cardboard template and make it out of ¼ inch.

I started with some cardboard to get a template.

I wanted some coverage under the bumper.

Here’s the winch plate from Harbor Freight, $38. Not bad.

Start cutting, welding and grinding. Lots of grinding:

Here’s the inside. Again, not too much function here, but solid when mounted:

Fully welded and mounted. I wanted to use the hooks instead of trying to figure out how to get D rings anchored to the frame. So, I cut the front corners off the winch plate so the hooks could be mounted flush on the top of the frame(no spacers).

One thing about Jeeps is, the fab doesn’t have to be perfect down to a mirror finish paint job. Blemishes and grind marks are there, but it’s a Jeep. The project went well, took a couple a weekends to accomplish. The goal: I’m on the hunt for a winch.

You've duplicated the conventional look of a catalog bought bumper, but with less function since you used 'on hand' steel. Buying the right steel isn't that expensive.
