Heres some pics of the rear end i'll be using.. again it is a Dana 70HD, i chose to use this axle because it is a higher clearance diff than a 14B, not that the 14B ring and pinion aren't big enough, lol but the dana 70 has a bigger ring.. the dana 70 has 35 spline axles where the 14B has 30.. i read somewhere that the 70 was rated 30% stronger.. i dont really care, i think they're both awesome axles, this is what the truck i bought had for a rear end.. SO IM USING IT hahaha..

both front and rear axles had fresh brakes on them, but the drums just had to go..
here are some pictures of the rear disc brake conversion and truss.. i know trussing an axle with 4"x1/2" wall axle tubes is rendered pointless, but the truss is not for strength... its for my upper control arm mounts..

for the conversion i used these parts..

* 73-87 Chevy K20 front calipers - $9.99 each
- also not that these do not have a mechanical ebrake, which is needed to be legal, '77 Eldorado rear calipers have a mechanical ebrake lever.. those are about $50 each.. since this is a rock crawler and will never see the street.. no ebrake will be found on this ride..
* '73-'87 Chevy K20 front rotors - $28.99 each
* do i really need to say which pads to use?? lol - $12
* '78 Ford E350 rear wheel studs $.60 each
I drew the caliper mounting bracket and the mounting flange on autocad myself so - free??
* Having the bracketry cut out on an autocad driven plasma-table - $40

grand total - $140 ish - a heck of a lot lighter... - better braking power

heres some pics.. enjoy..

now these in these pictures the new mounting flanges for the caliper mounting bracket ARE NOT welded on..
thats why the calipers are hanging straight down.. you can see i have a few pictures with the calipers up where they belong

love the dana 70HD. trust me if i didn't find a 14 bolt so cheap ( free ) i would of put one insteed. 4" tube's is what i really like about them. quick question why no rear steer? i regret not building a rear steer axle first insteed of a non steer.

for the 60 you doing chrome shafts or stock shafts with 35 spline 70 outers.

is that a TPI injection down tube i see in the background. thats what im building.

jason.

my 1st XJ with the same motor, tranny, t-case, and axles weighs 1200lbs less than my buddies TJ and mine had more body armor on it..
oh yeah my holds its own but they stiull give me crap even though i end up out wheeling them most of the time. and may i say that you are one hell of a welder, i am jealous, project is lookin good two thumbs up!!!

Some day it'll be full chromo but not right now.. im a 19 year old college student.. had to sell my first jeep to pay for this one.. workin with a 4900 dollar budget till i start workin again this summer..
and i didn't do a rear steer again for the budget aspect of the build and most of the competitions that i'll be runnin this beast in don't allow it..
and yup that it TPI injection down tube in the background.. HOWEVER it's not mine my brother is putting that on this truck, i tried buying it from him but all he had to say was 2 grand 2 grand.. he bought a WHOLE MOTOR witha spun rod that had the cyinder heads, all the fuel injection, even the complete harness and ECM for $365.. the motor had spun a bearing but he's using his bottom end anyways.. i might have to steal little brothers toys and hide them under the bed
and for the 60 outers.. im going to stick with the 35 spline inners 30 outers FOR NOW.. but probably this summer i'll get ahold of a 35 spline outer kit.. i think they're only 150 a side....

for what its worth ive been on the stock 30 spline outers for 4 years now with 39's and no braekage to date. run them and just dont be stupid with the pedel and they will last.
maybe i missed it but what year 60 you starting with. are they neck down or non neck down shafts. ive seen neck downs last but nothing like the non neck downs.

ya its allways the buget that kills the rear steer, but keep searching for another cheap 60 front and just run it offset like it is. weld it and just get 35 spline outer stubs and your done for now, that's the plan i have for my jeep.

for the buggy i have rockwells so im set there, agin nice work and are you going full hydro with a single ended CYL or a double.
