If your not going to do any SERIOUS wheelin, like competition rock crawling.. the unibody does just fine, and i've seen many XJs (with the unibody still intact) in rock crawls that have no problem holding their own..
my 1st XJ with the same motor, tranny, t-case, and axles weighs 1200lbs less than my buddies TJ and mine had more body armor on it..

I disagree... I parked my first XJ on a twisty spot while at work a few years ago. Wasn't that twisted but I couldn't open the hatch and had to park on a straight spot to open it. I know they do sell frame stiffeners but also hear there's many cons to these too...

Wow! How did I miss this thread for a day?! I've never owned a XJ but I've wondered about doing a frame like that.. lots of folks do similar frames in unibody cars for Hot Rodding/Racing but you don't see a lot of them in XJs for wheeling. You are definately "all in"!!!

Thats because the rear hatch is structural on an XJ. The doors aren't.

He didn't specify what part. All he said is the unibodies are strong enough for moderate wheeling. Makes sense though, they form a kind of cross brace to the body.

wish I had a V8.

Whats to keep you from dropping a 5.3 vortec into it after this though. That would be the ultimate XJ

also I dont really know what the cons would be for unibody stiffeners? Besides maybe welding to the existing unibody. I love having mine.

some day i'll scrape up the cash to buy some vortec cylinder heads, intake, and fuel injection.. but im not to impressed with the 5.3L. my dad has one in his 1/2 ton pickup and it really lacks the power.. i was thinkin 383 stroker

well a unibody chassis the WHOLE thing is structural.. and any other car would have done the same thing.. take a 1 ton truck and park it where you parked yours and the body lines on the bed and cab will no longer line up.. everything twists..
