Hobart makes a lot of nice smaller wire welders, those with flux core will be cheaper, I prefer those with plain wire and then you will have to add a tank for the shielding material. I started with a small Hobart and have moved on to a Snap-On Welder now. Good luck!

The Hobart 187 is a perfect machine for beginners.

I don't own one (have a 140 110V) but IIRC, since its 220, it should do up to 1/4, 5/16.

could you elaborate on that?
I was told it was a good all around machine for doing light to medium fab work on pretty much anything jeep related. I know someone who works in a jeep garage who uses one as their main (and only, I believe) welder. Did I make a choice i'm going to regret later, lol? Thanks ![]() |

I have the Hobart Handler 140. Great welder and is the biggest 110v you can get. Welds 1/4" on multiple passes.

Lincoln 135 is what I have. Good for 3/16th COULD do 1/4" but would require multiple passes and if possible both sides

If you are serious about welding, get yourself something that will handle the majority of what you want to do. the 110 welders are going to limit what you can do and are pretty weak on the duty cycle side. My advice would be to try and find an old Miller 35 (minimum) or better yet a 200. 200 can weld in AC and DC, it can also weld CRES, and Aluminum - if you can supply the amperage, that is. I have a 30A circuit so I was limited if I wanted to run the welder and other power tools at the same time. Miller 35 is 150A@60% duty cycle and can be bought for as little as $500. Most have a nice Tweco, not the cheap stuff they put on new 110 welders nowadays.

If you can afford it go straight to a 220 machine. The 110 machines are good if you're in an apartment, etc. but you'll quickly realize you should've gone with a 220...
