At the lowes you could get a lincolin pro-core 100 for about $350 and it comes ready to use flux cored wire, but you can buy a mig conversion kit for it. I got that welder for christmas but I havent used it yet. but they say it will weld up to 1/4".

I recommend a Hobart 140 as minimum. They are built by Miller and are reliable. I believe that 3/16" is stretching it a bit even with the Hobart 140.

Hobarts are on sale. The 140 Handler is going for $475.00.

I just ordered a Hobart Handler 140 w/ free cart and free shipping for $479 from NothernTool.com. I had some problems getting the order processed, but it's on its way here now.

That should work... for a while. The Handler 180 is 22V, and would put out a LOT more heat, but if your restricted to 110, then the 140 is a pretty good unit.

I despise 110 units, just not enough heat to make me happy. But, I welded for a profession too... Did structural steel, if I can burn a hole in 1/4, Im not happy.

I am using a HH140 and am very happy with it. Its my first welder and I havent had any trouble yet. I have welded up to 3/16" with it and it does fine although I preheated some of the more structural joints to ensure good penetration. I got mine at Tractor Supply for about 420 in Sept. and made a welding cart my first project.
