Tube bending help

So i just bought a tube bender, im going to go pick it up tonight. Is a JD2 bender with a 1 5/8 die, extended handle, stand, and degree wheel for 450 bucks. I have to drive 9 hours to get it but it will be worth it and i dont have anything better todo anyways so i still think its a pretty good deal.

So, is a 1 5/8 die good for anything? i was thinking about selling it and getting a 2 inch or 1.75 inch but i dont know if i would need it later for something? So i was thinking maybe i should keep it and a another one also. For now all i really care about bending is roll cages. Im going to attempt to build a sport cage for my buddys TJ and then the same for my dads Cj and hopefully ill be good enough by then to build a entire cage for my cj. From what ive read, 1 5/8 might be a little small for a roll cage, is that true? I guess i want to kinda match the factory cage size if im going to build off them right? Does anyone know what size that would be?

What else do i need? I have simple things like a sawzall and grinder but what tools do i still need to buy? I was already looking at a metal band saw and i think i know someone that has a chop saw i can use/have lol. I also know i need a notcher if i want them to meet up anywhere near center, But is there any other ones out there that are better than the jd2 ones? When i was taking welding a school they had a thing with a big arm you shove tube into and it notches it. That seems like a better way than a drill doesnt it? Anyone see a disadvantage to that kind?

Any help or suggestions would be great!

1-5/8" would work for a roll cage but I would use 1-3/4" for a roll cage. Factory cage to what? MY CJ7 roll bar was 2" tube. A band saw or chop saw would help a lot, you might also want a degree finder.

If you have the same luck as me, right after you get rid of that die you'll be doing a project that it would be perfect for.

Thats what im afraid of.

I was just wondering what it would be used for. i mean it would be to big for tube fenders and stuff probally but might be a little small for a cage.....i dont know, ill probally keep it just in case.

I would think 1 5/8" wouldn't be a bad size for grill guards, rock slider bars, stingers etc...

1 5/8" die should also work well with 1 1/4" Schedule 40 for exterior stuff...

Well, i called my dad to see if he could pick up some tube today. He said he went to the steel place and they looked at him like he was crazy when he asked for 1 5/8 pipe....The guy said they had 1 1/2 ID that measured close to 1 5/8 OD schedule 40 so he bought about 6 foot of that (just to mess around with and make a test bend or two. Well it was to big! So anyways we havent tested it yet. I need to get some 1 5/8 TUBE lol

We where alredy reading up on the hydro conversions, i think that would be awesome....Maybe some day, but im just going to try to use it as is for now. Im going to keep a eye out for a used pump and ram though...

Pics

im pretty happy, i think i got a descent deal on it.

First off you have to ask for tube... not pipe.

Secondly if the steel place didn't know what 1-5/8" was you need to go elsewhere as they're clueless.

I order online from www.speedymetals.com and usually have it same week if I order before Monday morning.
